Pastures

Producing high quality wool with good staple strength, low vegetable fault and high yield requires a year-round supply of quality pasture.

AWI invests in sustainable pasture systems research and extension across all production zones and pasture types to underpin gains in sheep productivity and wellbeing, enterprise profitability and the health of the natural resource.

In this section you will find tools and knowledge on pasture plant breeding and selection, grazing management, plant and soil nutrition and pasture pests and weeds.

Feed On Offer
To help improve producer skills in pasture assessment, AWI has prepared a photo gallery of Feed On Offer (FOO) standards.
Legumes
Legume pastures are a high quality source of animal feed that are palatable, highly digestible and high in protein.
Grasses
AWI invests in pasture breeding, selection and commercialisation to make available to woolgrowers a suite of high performance pasture legumes and grasses that support profitable, sustainable wool production.
Stubbles
Grazing stubbles is an important component of many mixed farming systems and can be a valuable source of feed for livestock over the summer months to fill feed gaps, provided careful feed budgeting, monitoring and grazing management is in place.
Weed and Pest Management
Insect pest damage and competition for space and nutrients from weeds can significantly reduce the productivity and persistence of Australian pasture
Grazing Management
AWI invests in pasture and grazing management to develop profitable and sustainable pasture systems across all production zones and pasture types.
