AWI Commentary

The Australian wool market experienced a more cautious tone this week, with the larger national offering meeting increasingly selective demand ahead of the Nanjing Wool Market Conference. A total of 28,392 bales was offered, with 25,009 bales sold and the pass-in rate rising to 11.9%.

The Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) fell 21 cents to close at 1,857 A¢/kg. In US dollar terms the EMI fell a more substantial 34 cents to 1,325 US¢/kg, as the Australian dollar weakened by around one US cent to 71.33 US cents, cushioning the decline in local currency.

Tuesday’s market opened with mixed results in the Eastern centres with categories ranging from 21 cents dearer and 34 cents cheaper.  Well-specified 18 and 18.5-micron wool, with high tensile strength and low vegetable matter attracting comparatively stronger competition.

Fremantle one-day auction experienced the larger corrections, with merino micron categories falling 29–70 cents. The Eastern selling continued lower on Wednesday, although at a slower rate, with all Merino fleece finishing 3–41 cents cheaper.

While Chinese buyers approached this week with more caution, renewed appetite for inventory replacement from European and Indian mills tempered further price weakening.  The low greasy wool supply forecast remains a key factor with the season-to-date offerings 8.6% below last year at 252,452 bales.

Following this week’s decline, the EMI remains 513 cents, or 38.2%, above where it was 12 months ago. Trade attention now turns to the 37th Nanjing Wool Market Conference which start this Friday 18th September.
