AWI Commentary
The wool market found solid support this week, rebounding strongly after two consecutive weeks of losses. Buyer activity returned to the auction rooms, with those who had held off purchasing in recent weeks moving to secure volume ahead of the Easter recess.
While a softer Australian dollar provided some assistance, it was the heightened competition within the sale rooms that primarily drove the price lift.
A reduced offering, combined with growing awareness that available stocks of stored wool are diminishing, continues to shape the broader market outlook. As a result, the market is expected to become increasingly reliant on freshly shorn wool in the months ahead.
Price gains were led by the finer end, rising 120–125 cents, easing to 80–85 cents through the medium microns, while broader types lifted 15–20 cents. Cardings also recorded solid gains of 35–40 cents.
Buyer preference remains clearly focused on higher-specification wool, reinforcing the premium for well-prepared clips with low vegetable matter and reliable fibre specifications.

• The monthly comparisons of Total Weight tested for March 2026 compared with March 2025 is -10.2%.
• The progressive comparison of Total Weight tested for July 2025 to March 2026 compared with the same period last season is now -9.5%.
• AWTA Ltd has tested 208.5 mkg(million kilograms) this season compared with 230.4 mkg for the equivalent period last season.
The Easter recess will provide a break in the auctions next week, post the recess attention will turn to if the strong pricing factors can continue to defy the broader global uncertainty.
