AWI Commentary
The Australian wool market found solid support this week, recovering from last week’s losses. Prices rose across both selling days at all three selling centres, with most micron categories recording gains.

The EMI finished 12 cents higher at 1,677, while the WMI, over its single selling day, lifted by 19 cents to 1,878. A softer Australian dollar underpinned the market, with the EMI in USD unchanged, while providing a welcome tailwind that translated into improved returns for sellers. On a year-on-year basis, the EMI has risen by 462 cents (38%) in Australian dollar terms and by 417 cents (54.9%) in US dollar terms.

Fine microns (16.5–19.0) led the market with gains largely in the 20–30 cent range, while medium microns (19.5–24.5) lifted by 15–20 cents. Crossbred microns recorded mixed results but were mostly steady to 10 cents higher, and Merino Cardings finished 10–15 cents stronger on the week.

This week saw a reduced offering of 38,736 bales pass through the sale rooms, down 4,846 bales on the previous week. The clearance rate lifted to 96.7%. The steady improvement seen this week is a positive sign for the market, helping to consolidate conditions following the market movements to start the calendar year.
