AWI Commentary

The Australian wool market delivered a positive performance this week, with gains recorded across most micron categories. The Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) climbed 17 cents to 1,521 AC/kg, while the Western Market Indicator (WMI) advanced 11 cents to 1,676 AC/kg.Notably the EMI in USD rises above the vaunted US$10 threshold for the first time since the initial rally in early October.

Fine wools (16.5-19 micron) were the standout performers, leading the market with average gains of 15 cents. Medium microns (19-22 micron) attracted similar support, finishing 10-15 cents stronger for the week. However, crossbred wools remained under pressure, easing 5 cents as the market enters the main supply season for this category. Carding wools showed resilience with average increases of 10 cents.

Offerings declined 15% this week, while the clearance rate increased to 95%, reflecting strong competition among buyers. The market shifted in sellers' favour, with growers capitalising on the favorable market conditions.

The Australian dollar strengthened this week despite softer the GDP numbers, aided by US dollar weakness. While a stronger AUD typically presents headwinds for exporters, the robust demand evident in this week's auction results suggests buyers remain willing to compete despite less favorable exchange rates.

The November AWTA test data released this week continues to highlight a reduced supply helping to underpin current price strength.

AWTA November Key Test Data

• The total weight tested for November 2025 compared with November 2024 shows a 14.2% reduction in wool tested.

• The progressive weight tested for July 2025 to November 2025 compared with the same period last season shows 10.4% less wool tested so far this season.

• AWTA Ltd has tested 116.5 mkg (million kilograms) this season compared with 130.1 mkg for the equivalent period last season.

Next week sees 41,383 bales offered, with all three selling centres selling on a Tuesday-Wednesday schedule.
