Hookworm (Bunostomum phlebotomum)

The hookworm of sheep (and goats) infects the small intestine. It is rarely a problem. It has a direct life cycle with a pre-patent period (the time from infection to appearance of eggs in the dung) of one to two months and infects sheep orally or by skin penetration.

It is a stout worm (20 mm) with a large mouth and the body may be hook shaped. Its distribution is subtropical but is rare. It may cause diarrhoea, anaemia and sore feet. Its eggs are similar to others in sheep faeces.
