Organic 'drenches'

There are numerous reports of a multitude of organic 'remedies' that have been tried for the treatment of sheep worms. The vast majority of these are often only supported by anecdotal evidence of efficacy and safety.

When contemplating the use of any unregistered animal treatments it is always critical to consider issues such as animal health and welfare, safety and toxicity risks and animal product quality and residues.

You should seek specialist advice before using any of these treatments.

Some of the more well known potential organic remedies include:

  • Parts of various species of the wormwood plant group have shown irregular impact on worms.
  • Parts of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica) have been reported to have low level impact on barbers pole worm.
  • Copper sulphate, or bluestone solution has been a historical worm treatment, especially against worms that live in the sheep’s 4th stomach (abomasum).
  • Copper oxide wire particles have also been shown to be effective against barbers pole worm.

Copper in all forms can be toxic. Seek professional advice before using copper of any form.
