During September - October 2004, a 10 page questionnaire, asking about worm, blow-fly and lice control practices, was mailed to a random sample of 4,386 sheep producers in the major sheep production regions of Australia.
Support from sheep producers was high with 1,337 (30.4%) responses being completed. A second and shorter survey was sent to those sheep producers who had not responded and this increased total responses to 2,294 (52.3%). This response is excellent and reflects strong interest, among sheep producers, in parasite control issues.
The national survey was conducted to establish a benchmark of parasite control practices around Australia. This benchmark will allow later surveys to establish trends in parasite control over time.
For example, it will be useful to know if the proportion of sheep producers who have conducted an accepted drench resistance trial has increased; if the frequency of drench treatment or lice and fly control practices have changed.
